This carburetor had been serviced and thoroughly cleaned only a few months before this problem was found.  

Here is the carburetor showing the screen in it with the crud on it.


Here is the screen and the crud that I had to scrape off the screen.



The brown substance on screen in the top photo is caused by ethanol, which is ethyl alcohol.  The screen was completely stopped up and the engine would not run unless the choke was completely "on" and then it would barely start.  The engine had a new fuel filter installed and the carburetor was rebuilt only several months before this problem surfaced.  During the carburetor being rebuilt this screen was completely cleaned which means this coating came to be in only a few months time.  Whats more, this machine was started once per month after the carburetor rebuild, until obviously it would no longer start.
