Stanford Researchers: Ethanol Isn't the Answer

PALO ALTO, Calif. (KCBS)  -- For years we've been hearing about the benefits of ethanol as a clean-burning alternative fuel. But some researchers at Stanford aren't so convinced.

Ethanol has been thought of as a solution as far as climate change and global warming. It's been touted as a renewable fuel, said Diana Ginnebaugh, a doctoral candidate in engineering at Stanford.

But, says Ginnebaugh, theres a fundamental problem with ethanol when compared to gasoline. “It would increase ozone formation and urban air pollution.

Ginnebaugh and her colleagues have been studying ethanol emissions, and are concerned about the generation of ozone precursors known as aldehydes.

Acid aldehyde emissions increased almost 2,300 percent when you're using ethanol instead of gasoline, said Ginnebaugh.

The Stanford researchers have been modeling the use of E-85, a common blend of gasoline and ethanol. Their research was funded by NASA, the EPA, and the Department of Energy.
